Not every flooring project is straightforward. Some require extensive preparation, specialized installation methods, and a team that understands how to solve problems before they become costly issues. At Tough Coat Flooring, we take pride in tackling complex projects and delivering durable, long-lasting results.
Recently, we completed a flooring system for a school facility that required multiple phases of preparation and installation to achieve proper drainage, waterproofing, and long-term performance.
Before any sloping work began, our team carefully established elevations throughout the space to ensure the finished floor would direct water properly toward the drains. Precision at this stage is critical, as even small variations can impact the overall performance of the flooring system.
Existing cracks were reinforced using fiberglass bridging before a flexible waterproof membrane was installed. This extra level of preparation helps create a stronger, more resilient flooring system capable of handling the demands of a busy facility.
To create the required floor pitch, berms were installed at predetermined elevations and allowed to cure. These berms then served as guides during the screeding process, helping our team develop a consistent slope across the entire area.
A mortar mix was carefully placed, screeded, and finished before the floor was grouted and prepared for the next phase of installation.
Once the substrate was ready, we installed a seamless epoxy cove base to create a sanitary transition between the floor and walls. An epoxy base coat was then applied, followed by a flake broadcast incorporating non-slip additives to improve safety for building occupants.
The system was completed with a protective topcoat designed to enhance durability, simplify maintenance, and extend the life of the floor.
Projects like this are a reminder that successful flooring installations are about much more than applying a coating. They require planning, technical expertise, and a team that understands how every layer contributes to the final result.
